No new liquor shops against peoples will: HC

CUTTACK: In a landmark judgment that could change the way liquor shop licences are granted in the State, the High Court has held that the State Government is duty-bound to honour the will of the people and local representatives while permitting opening of liquor outlets.

The will of the people must prevail over the intention of the Government for grant of liquor shop licence in a particular area. Achieving revenue collection target cannot be a ground for opening of liquor shops, the court observed.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice V Gopalagowda and Justice B N Mohapatra said the Government is duty-bound to ensure that the rule of law is maintained and for that it should...

Family’s lottery win leads to lawsuit

The Urquhart family was overjoyed and prepared for a life of relaxation when they won a $51 million MEGA Millions lottery jackpot.

That initial happiness has soured. Etta May Urquhart is suing her adult son, alleging fraud and financial elder abuse and claiming he has swindled her of winnings that were rightfully hers and her husbands.

The complaint filed in Kern County Superior Court alleges Urquharts son, Ronnie Orender, directed the entire winnings to accounts he controlled and to which Etta May and her husband had no access. In addition to a variety of investments, Orender spent $2.3 million on four houses in Bakersfield, has bought at least 10 vehicles and made cash gifts...

A recipe for more jobs: Stronger economic growth

A drop in the unemployment rate wasnt necessarily a healthy sign for the job market. The rate fell from 8.2 percent in March to 8.1 percent in April. But that was mainly because more people gave up looking for work.

People who arent looking for jobs arent counted as unemployed.

The 115,000 jobs added in April were fewer than the 154,000 jobs added in March, a number the government revised up from its earlier estimate of 120,000. It also marked a sharp decline from December through February, when the economy averaged 252,000 jobs per month.

The percentage of adults working or looking for work has fallen to its lowest level in more than 30 years. Many have become discouraged...

Krugman: Inequality is impeding economic recovery

Before the Great Recession, I would sometimes give lectures in which I would talk about rising inequality, making the point that the concentration of income at the top had reached levels not seen since 1929. Often, someone in the audience would ask whether this meant that another depression was imminent.

Well, whaddya know?

Did the rise of the 1 percent (or, better yet, the 0.01 percent) cause the Lesser Depression were now living through? It probably contributed. But the more important point is that inequality is a major reason the economy is still so depressed and unemployment so high. For we have responded to the crisis with a mix of paralysis and confusion – both of which...
